The extraction of cannabidiol takes place via a carbon dioxide process called CO2 extraction which uses pressurized carbon dioxide to extract the CBD from the entire plant. CO2 functions as a solvent when reaching extreme temperatures, when it is under the boiling point, it’s cold.
It is processed to create oil from the plant. It is also a clean and environmentally friendly process and produces Gold Standard hemp free of contaminants, pesticides, and herbicides.
That said, one of the most confusing aspects for pet parents is the psychotropic issue and THC. With hemp referring to cannabis varieties that are grown for agricultural purposes, and the by-product is an oil, the level of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is very low. The U.S Congressional Research Service in 2016 reported that a level of 1% of THC is considered the threshold to the “high” effect.
All hemp CBD oil supplements have 0.3% THC or less. This is the dividing line between psychotropic or not. There are current laws that regulate hemp cultivation in the EU, the US, and Canada. All-in-all it’s good to note that hemp is industrial crops that many CBD pet companies purchase their non-psychotropic CBD from.
There are also numerous pet CBD hemp oil supplements on the market that have very little to no CBD, so it’s important for consumers to obtain a certificate of analysis (COA) for the product that they’re purchasing. Read the ingredient labels, potency, and purity marketing points, and compare them to the ingredients list.
Dr. Casara Andre, founder of Veterinary Cannabis Education and Consulting goes on to explain that there are way too many bogus CBD products for pets on the market. She recommends that other veterinarians do the following:
“If team members are asked about CBD or cannabis products, I would encourage them to pass the question off to someone who is well-versed on the endocannabinoid system, potential drug interactions, the pros and cons of cannabis therapy and how to choose the right product for the patient.”
CBD works together with in the endocannabinoid system in dogs, cats, and horses, just like it does in humans. One of the best ways of getting optimal benefits from pet CBD products is to first consult with a CBD savvy veterinarian for a diagnosis, so as to get a personalized dosage for each pet.
Cannabidiol for pets works well in the form of treats and tinctures. CBD transdermal patches and CBD creams for pets have also been tested in Israel by Weedley, and found to be effective.
